Societygal feature with Meredith Uyeyama (owner of Quixotic Design Co.)
Meredith is the Director of Design and Owner of a small design agency - Quixotic Design Co. (which is the company that did the rebranding for Societygal!) Meredith combines her artistic and technical skills to work one-on-one with clients. She leads by design, guiding her team to construct captivating brand experiences that stand out above the rest.
Meredith graduated from UC Santa Barbara and soon began on a path of crafting prints, building websites, and developing brands. She has been illustrating since the age of 10 and has a tasteful perspective on all things design. You’ll find her in Sacramento where she spends time embarking on outdoor adventures with her boyfriend and cuddling up with her cat (and personal assistant), BB. On weekends, she is often covered in flour baking the next best treat...Oh, and, did we mention she loves espresso?
We chatted with Meredith to get to know her a little bit better, and here is what she had to say:
Tell us about yourself and what you do? My name is Meredith and I’m the Design Director and owner of a small design agency, Quixotic Design Co. I work remotely with an amazing design team that shares a common love for progressive design and pushing the envelope. I’ve been painting and illustrating since I was a kid and eventually developed my skill set (thanks UCSB + YouTube) into a career where I get to bring people’s visions to life.
What are your offerings in your business? We develop your new or existing business into a memorable, stylized brand with custom logo, package and web design solutions.
How do you manage a work / life balance? Do you set any specific boundaries? While working from home has its perks (I.e. setting your own schedule and hardly ever reaching for a bra), it can be tricky to navigate work/life balance in this realm. I have learned to set a “cut-off” time for checking email and social media (after many late nights of answering last-minute requests) and to take a 30 minute break in the middle of the day to clear my head. I usually go for a quick walk and when I come back, I feel ready to jump back in.
What was the inspiration behind the Societygal rebranding? The inspiration for Societygal’s rebrand is a thoughtful blend of Scandinavian, contemporary typography, muted pastel pinks, and playful, feminine iconography. We aimed to create a “cool girl” aesthetic with a deliberate juxtaposition of masculine lines with feminine colors.
Describe your creative process. What are the major steps? Our creative process begins with a kick-off call to outline all project objectives and set a timeline. From there, we collaborate on a Pinterest mood board with our client to better get a sense of their style. Next, we’ll begin ideation (researching and sketching) before we take off on a full design exploration via Illustrator, Procreate, Indesign or Photoshop.
How do you overcome a creative block? This happens often - and I usually have to get outside and get my mind off of things in order to overcome creative block. When I return to my desk, I’ve got a fresh set of eyes and feel like I can better make creative connections.
What is does your morning routine look like? Do you stick to a schedule? Every morning, I wake up early so that I have time to set intentions for the day before starting work. I usually start some coffee (ok, a whole pot), meditate for 5-10 minutes, plan my day, water the garden, and briefly watch something funny (I.e. Celebrity Mean Tweets, an Ellen short, etc.) to start the day off with a good laugh.
What advice do you have for our readers? To all of the small business owners trying to make it in this sea of Instagram comparison, KEEP GOING! Staying consistent on social media, maintaining networking relationships, and doing quality work in order to gain word-of-mouth recommendations are all integral parts in the success of your business. Don’t be afraid to reach out directly to brands or influencers that you dream of working with. You must be your own advocate and believe in yourself for others to see your true value.
Favorite food +/or drinks? My favorite food is definitely breakfast. I LOVE going to brunch (anyone else wake up starving everyday?) and sharing lattes with friends. Oh and, I am obsessed with espresso.
