How to Choose A Niche: Top Tips for Influencers

Finding the right niche is a crucial part of building a blog and establishing yourself online. If you pick a niche with too much competition, your blog will get overlooked. If you pick a smaller niche with no demand, your blog will barely make an impact. You need to find a niche that’s competitive enough to know people are taking interest in it, but rare enough to stand out and get “known” for your niche.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Pick a topic you enjoy talking about: Starting a blog is a really fun process, but a lot of people give up blogging after a couple of months because they often lose interest in writing about certain topics. It's important that you pick a topic for your blog that you also like to learn and talk about and that your truly passionate about. A huge tip in succeeding as an influencer is remaining true and authentic to your audience. A way to achieve this, is to write about something you actually enjoy so it comes more naturally.

List your areas of expertise: Is there a particular topic you feel you’re an expert in or have had success in the past? Think back to anytime you’ve given advice to people, you’ve enjoyed learning or done great in school or even a job.

Do market research: The next step is to make sure that there’s a profitable and big enough market for your niche. This can be done with a small market research. You can start by using Google and type in specific key terms that relate to your niche and see what comes up!

Pick a smaller niche: You might enjoy blogging about fashion trends or beauty products, but these niches are fairly saturated. At this point there are so many influencers in each industry, so how can you tailor your topics to be slightly more targeted? If you enjoy talking about fashion, you could be a blogger known for “affordable fashion trends” or “all black fashion”, etc.

Find a topic that’s profitable: We do believe that you should find your passion first, and everything else will follow, but we also need to make an income. Most blogs start as hobbies but end up turning into full-fledged careers. During your research to pick a niche or topic, you should also think long-term on what could potentially turn into a full-time career.

Research the trends and future of your niche: You may want to start blogging about winter-wear during the fall and winter months, and it may go viral because it’s relevant to current time. But in summer, you might not be getting a lot of visits and action on your blog. Think about what’s going to be relevant and still trending one year from the time you start. If you choose to blog about the fashion, you can choose to switch up your topics to match the seasons and time of year.
